@MrZachG I was quite surprised a couple of weeks ago when someone told me their district decided to recommend against a particular program b/c kids were doing too much workbook practice. Ok, but you're good with kids in groups in front of whiteboards not really doing any math?

Some - no, all - of the best math programs can be perceived as being “too easy” and “overscaffolding” when introducing skills. This largely comes from the fact that those who are charged with evaluating programs do not know what good acquisition instruction looks like.

I love everything about the @NASAArtemis crew and mission! It’s an extremely important and complex mission, yet they seem to be having so much fun. Even the people running the social media accounts for @NASA are having fun. My only “complaint” is that they didn’t plan “Story Time in Space”. That would have made the mission absolutely perfect. There’s no doubt this mission will inspire some young people to pursue careers in science, technology, and aviation. It would be great if it also inspired them to pursue reading. Maybe next time!

Reflecting on the multiple-strategy approach to teaching basic math operations: it creates confusion & cognitive overload, but it also comes with an opportunity cost. If so much time is spent on multiple strategies, when do students actually become fluent with any one of them?

@rastokke They don’t. This was a thing for years in AB. It’s based on a philosophy of “feelings” rather than common sense or science or practicality. Once taught allll the “strategies” Ss could choose 1 that felt right for them. Regardless of proficiency or efficacy.

@rastokke Which is why the govt, trustees & superintendents need to ensure classroom conditions in K-3 are conducive to learning. Because I can confidently say that right now (in AB) they are not. @ABDanielleSmith

If students struggle with fraction arithmetic, algebra is inaccessible. If they struggle with basic number operations (including times tables), fractions are inaccessible. Math is hierarchical & gaps compound. There's no way around it. We have to get math right in primary.

@IrisThinksMeh So glad you enjoyed it! Can’t wait to watch it, I love finding out what happens behind the scenes, so much time/effort/expertise goes into big productions and those Plp never get the recognition they deserve.

@swingonastar3 We enjoyed it. It’s a lovely insight into filming with some shorts interviews with a few actors and talks with folks who vuild the sets, do special effects and the women who create the costumes. A really fun watch!
