and medical management as well. In the majority of hospitals w MUA as an option in the ED, the OBGYN MDs perform them. Definitely not the right option for all patients, but great to have available if needed to prevent an unneeded admission or unnecessary general anesthesia in OR

Many women opt for expectant or medical management and not a procedure. For some an MUA in the ED is not the best option.

That is not to say that the ED cannot provide this, but rather that the overall atmosphere is so frenetic that it may not be in the patient’s best interests at that time

MISCARRIAGE IS EM and we need to care more. Manual uterine aspiration to remove POC in ED is simple, safe, fast, efficacious, cost efficient, decreases admissions, conserves OR resources, and improves ED flow. Need dept champs, protocols and training! @KQ_MD @feminemtweets #FIX19

@redstockinglady Thanks so much for the question! For the overwhelming majority of patients who receive MUA in the ED, they’re candidates for the procedure bc they’re bleeding already, and most of them have a cervix that is already open, so no dilation is necessary.
