@And1129 I think our GasBench, in it's own special way, has been asking for the same treatment this week...

@dimorei @labioarqueologa @ChrisStantis @chris_tt_cheung @WolfmannotJack @Andrea_Erhardt I agree with Wolfram, but if you do decide on a proof-of-concept study on yourself please count me out of the sampling portion. We're pretty good friends but I hate blood.
English

Any thoughts? @labioarqueologa @ChrisStantis @chris_tt_cheung @KY_Isotopes @WolfmannotJack @Andrea_Erhardt

#Stableisotope researchers: My dentist gave me a paste for tooth sensitivity. You put some on the tooth & you can safely swallow after 2 mins. It's made out of milk protein casein--contains Ca & PO4.
Do you think this could alter the oxygen isotope comp. of my tooth enamel?🦷

@climate_badger You aren't alone in this battle. Long live Coplen 2011!
English

I have also been fighting a one person battle with journal style guides to italicise the delta and put a space between the numeral and permil symbol as per Coplen 2011 (doi.org/10.1002/rcm.51…) but accept this is a niche pursuit.
English

This. If you say "del" you mean nabla, which has nothing to do with stable oxygen isotopes.
Dr Georgy Falster@raindrop_herder
this AGU i've realised that i have a GIANT bee in my bonnet; this bee says "del ≠ delta" and i KNOW that it's a silly overly pedantic bee but at the end of a day watching isotope talks i just can't take anymore 'del-O-18' that or i've just run out of patience for 2020 generally

@KimBaublys @USGS We've had great success with IAEA-SO-5 and IAEA-SO-6 for d18O-BaSO4 too!
English

@KimBaublys @USGS Sometimes I wished we analyzed waters vis TC/EA just so I could use these...
English

@And1129 That's so cool! Keep us posted!
English

@KY_Isotopes I love the TC/EA too! I'm developing a hematite method for oxygen that is looking promising!
English

@And1129 I tried three different brands of AgCl, all of which had horrible blanks, before settling on 99.99% graphite powder as an additive. Beautiful peaks and reproducibility. People complain about it, but I love the TC/EA. Such a freaky little box.
English

@KY_Isotopes That's what I was thinking too, but it never occurs with blanks, but always with this one particular reagent: Nickel Carbon wool. Odd.

@And1129 Nah, it was easy. A quick computer + Isodat reboot and we were back in action. Thankfully it wasn't a sample though.
English

@And1129 I started using USGS64 glycine for carbon work where we expect values near or lower than -30 permil. Great standard, always very consistent.
English

@KY_Isotopes Those are my two Glycine standards I may have told you about. I synthesized them spiking one with 13C. Delta values are -47.45 and +4.88 per mil VPDB respectively.
English

@WolfmannotJack @Andrea_Erhardt I'm assuming it was vegetable oil, although it could have been something else. They're a great client and we knew what we were getting into. I do love the LGR for the fact that I simply had to pull the injector block and clean it and we were back in action!
English

@KY_Isotopes @Andrea_Erhardt Some people have no clue about nothing. I admire your patience. I would have returned the crappy samples to sender. Did you tell them to use silicone oil the next time? Even paraffin oil would have been a better choice than vegetable oil.
English

@WolfmannotJack @Andrea_Erhardt This is great! I'll give it a shot if we encounter more samples like this!
English

@KY_Isotopes @Andrea_Erhardt One trick to try next time would be adding a few drops of n-heptane to get a clearer phase separation, but I hope for your sake there won’t be a next time. 😉
English

@WolfmannotJack @Andrea_Erhardt Almost no separation of oil and water in the affected samples. I missed a few on the first session and ended up having to abort to clean an oily injector block. After that I tried vigorous centrifuging and then syringing with 0.45 and then 0.2 micron syringes. No luck...
English

@KY_Isotopes @Andrea_Erhardt I never had that happen to me but I’m not surprised. 😂😂😂
Out of curiosity, what was the occasion?
