The communities are preparing their list of demands from @Petro_Tal to compensate for the massive harm to the livelihoods of people here. I hope that @Petro_Tal will invest some of its profits back into the communities it is harming through their extraction. This is Manco Capac

The oil was being transported from the oil company, @Petro_Tal. So far, they have not brought even the bare minimum of support to the community. The company makes massive profits off the oil they take from under the communities, and the communities are left with the consequences.

Today, we are experiencing a tragic environmental disaster on the Puinahua River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River. A massive oil spill is contaminating the rivers and lakes. People in the communities drink the water from this river and eat the fish from the lakes.

Back in 2020, I had to evacuate from Peru after the country went into lockdown. That meant abandoning my dream project before I even go to start collections. I’m finally back to do the project as a postdoc and happy to report that our first 2 weeks of collections were a success!

I’ll be sharing periodic updates of our 4 month-long trip up the Amazon and Ucayali Rivers, where we will be stopping in 20 remote communities to collect Aedes aegypti mosquitoes! We will use these samples to study fluvial movement patterns & insecticide resistance establishment
