True justice for George Floyd means renewing our conviction to create a world where police do not have the opportunity to use violence to target Black people.

George Floyd should not have died under an officer’s knee — he should still be alive today. So should Daunte Wright, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black people killed by police.

This racist system of policing also resulted in the killing of Daunte Wright by police less than 10 miles from this trial. And it will continue taking lives by police violence and incarceration until we overhaul it entirely.

George Floyd will never again play games with his daughter, Gianna. He’ll never go on walks through the park with his fiancée, Courteney. He will never play basketball with his brother, Philonise. True justice would mean George Floyd was never killed in the first place.

While today’s verdict is a small win for police accountability and may help heal a grieving community, the systems that allowed George to be murdered — ripping him away from his family and the communities that loved him so much — remain fully intact.

BREAKING: Derek Chauvin has been convicted of the murder of George Floyd. For the first time in Minnesota state history, a white police officer has been held accountable for killing a Black man.

It needs said that the wholesale dismantling of liberal democracy the Right is after, that it now requires for its political survival, takes more than racist legislation, targeted disenfranchisement, and stacked courts. It requires violence.

Maybe, instead of just talking about “rapid secularization” with church attendance dipping below 50%, it’s time to talk about how white identity evangelical churches are radicalized, have traumatized untold numbers of people, and function as centers for gross intolerance.
