The Calgary Flames have signed the most sought-after college free agent, Tyson Gross. The 23-year-old centre is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound Calgary native who was captain at St Cloud State. He sits top 20 in scoring in the nation and will make his NHL debut before season’s end. The product of Springbank minor hockey was the only college free agent the Flames chased. Exciting day for a kid who had grown up around the Dome. The Flames have room to sign two more players, which will likely include C Jonathan Castagna and D Abram Wiebe.

Last deadline thought: Not a fan of what the #Isles did. Using that late Colorado first isn’t disastrous - it’s just the wrong team to be making the Schenn trade imo. Should still be focusing on the bigger picture, and doing that with a Pageau extension made me more confused

Barring trades, the #Flames will have had at least 2 First rounders in 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028. Add on top 7 2nd rounders in ‘26 + ‘27. (Technically it’s only 4 this draft but with Ottawa forfeiting a pick this year, the Canucks 3rd rounder will be 64th overall)

I was about to rip the #Flames for what they didn’t do today, but they’ve completely flipped that. A 1st is great, a 2nd in ‘27 to make sure they have multiple, minimal retention, and a fun prospect in Curran

I still think they shoulda gotten an asset to take on that Strome contract. But, after retention on Kadri, it fills that salary slot for them to be above the cap floor, and they could flip him this time next year

I’ve got no problem with this deal for the #Flames. Battaglia really stagnated this year, and I didn’t love how his game projected.
