@DrBradJohnson Does anyone have tips for helping a painfully shy student feel like they belong? I have tried all of my fav moves but my shy student has not spoken to any of their classmates all year. They are comfortable asking me for help, so that’s what’s working for now.

Every human desires to find a place where they feel like they belong. Leaders, do you create that for your staff? Teachers, do you create that for your students?

One of my Algebra 1 students attends an evening math program and is working on Algebra 2 there. In my class, he refuses to participate in group work & wanders around the classroom. When I tell him to rejoin his group, he asks why. How would teachers respond to this Q?

@pwharris I like marble slides mini golf as a review for plotting points. It’s a nice lead in to slope.

@edtechmathteach I’m intrigued. I have often wondered if this would be right for my students.

3 years ago, I made the decision to change to the #gridmethod in my Algebra 1 classes for 2nd semester. I spent most of my whole winter break working on my first GRID. It was a ton of work but the best decision I ever made for my students.

Which math topic is only taught because the standards say to teach it but in reality we'd all be fine if it disappears?

@bradshan97 @howie_hua Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a statistician for 15 years. I am so happy these are part of the curriculum

@Mathgarden @howie_hua My father worked as a surveyor for his entire career. Trigonometry put food on my table every day of my childhood.

@mrs_frommert @tguskey @mssackstein @rickwormeli2 @joshua_r_eyler I recently surveyed students after the Keysone exam. Many regret skipping practice opportunities. I’m putting together an “advice from former students “ sheet for next school year. I’m hoping that will inspire a few more to practice on their own.

@MrZachG One of my di section had an issue that pulled me out of the room moments after handing out new content. My students discussed the content and when I returned to the room, they presented their thinking. That class has recalled the concept better than my other sections.

One thing I've observed across all productive struggle classrooms is that the students are tricked into thinking that struggling=learning. In a di classroom, however, the students know they've learned when they can do the math. They're so proud. Such a better message for life.

My team and I are creating a bunch of free math tasks to spark thinking, curiosity, and joy for students. Let me know if you’d like to test any out with students. #iteachmath #buildingthinkingclassrooms l

@edtechmathteach My district is asynchronous today. Teachers have office hours for morning classes and afternoon classes. An ELL student didn’t understand and joined the morning office hour. I was able to work 1-1 with her for the first time. I gained so much insight into her needs

I really hope the day is the last e-learning day for a while. I really don't enjoy this that much. The only upside is I can wear comfortable pants and no one knows any different 😏

I’m teaching Algebra 1 to English Language Learners. Does anyone know where I can find posters with both Arabic and Bengali numbers?

@mrdardy I started giving a 3-5 question graded quiz about once a week. Students can earn back their lost points through quiz corrections. It helps my middle schoolers recognize what they need to practice/understand.

A question on my mind - Where do you stand on the idea of pop quizzes? On one hand, it feels like a more honest check on where students are. On the other hand, it feels punitive and random on the Ss end. I do not use them myself, just thinking out loud here.

@Audrey_Mendivil @MrCorleyMath I teach middle school math. Once kids get smart phones, there’s no point to giving homework. Kids won’t do it unless it’s graded. If it’s graded, they use photo math to get the answers.

I don't give HW to my 8th grade students, but here are my own children doing their math HW in 3rd and 4th grade. Almost all of their HW is math.

@kkevinaten @rastokke Interesting point. How do you feel about homework assigned on platforms such as IXL or Delta Math that provide videos and feedback/solutions on missed problems?

Any “practice” in math must involve the teacher and grow from number sense. The baseball coach would never send a bat home and tell the player to “practice.” Practice without coaching and immediate feedback is reinforcing bad habits and only serves to grow fear and resentment toward math 🤷#stopthehomeworkmadness

A phrase I wish would go away: "drill and kill" Practice is extremely important in math. Disparaging practice & making teachers feel bad for getting students to practice a lot is irresponsible. Math is cumulative & when you don't practice enough, it's easy to get left behind.
