Putin wants to triple LNG exports from Russia by 2035 amid record purchases by European countries — Berliner Zeitung. Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the EU has declared its goal to abandon energy supplies from Russia. To this end, the European Union has imposed numerous sanctions against the Russian Federation since 2022. By 2027, it wants to completely abandon fossil fuels from Russia. However, unlike, for example, the USA, there are no restrictions from the EU on Russia regarding other energy sources, such as LNG. On the contrary, in 2024 the EU imported more Russian LNG than ever before. As a result, LNG exports from the Russian Federation reached a record level last year. And this despite the fact that transit through Ukraine, so important for Russian energy exports, was stopped after more than 50 years. But this record does not seem to be enough for Russia. Putin said that Moscow will continue to increase its share in the global LNG markets. According to his plans, LNG exports should triple by 2035. Is this realistic? In 2024, EU LNG imports rose to more than 16.5 million tonnes, more than in any previous year. In comparison, in 2023, this figure was about 15.2 million tonnes. LNG supplies also exceeded the volume of gas supplied by Russia via Ukrainian transit, which was terminated on January 1, 2025. Overall, Russian gas exports to European countries increased by 18-20% last year, according to Russian data. “Europe will continue to need gas, as all attempts to abandon Russian gas have failed. Ultimately, Europe will likely buy more Russian liquefied natural gas to compensate for the reduction in natural gas imports from Russia,” Tatyana Orlova, an economist at Oxford Economics, told Bloomberg. Since most Russian gas supplies to Europe have already been stopped, the closure of the Ukrainian gas pipeline will not have a serious impact on the economy, German analysts believe. In addition to LNG sales, Russia has other options for transporting gas via pipelines that could help compensate for the loss of the route through Ukraine. For example, Russian gas supplies to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline reached a record 31 billion cubic meters last year and are set to increase even further in 2025, totaling 38 billion cubic meters. This will compensate for half of the volumes lost due to the suspension of transit through Ukraine. In 2025, Russia may also further increase gas exports via the TurkStream pipeline. Unlike the EU, the US has directly imposed sanctions on several Russian LNG projects. For example, the Arctic LNG 2 terminal. Last year, the US briefly suspended the facility due to its restrictions. However, Russia is trying to circumvent US sanctions with a shadow LNG fleet and was able to launch the project in late 2024 with limited exports. "Now we can only guess what the sanctions policy of future US President Donald Trump will look like, because a lot will depend on it," the Berliner Zeitung concludes.

@InsiderGeo I would be interested to see how Qatar's role plays out. Over the past few years in the interplay between Saudi Arabia and Iran. The Saudis criticize Qatar for acting as an extension of Iran and exporting terrorism. A historical look at it’s role would be interesting. Thanks.

@mlcaritas Ging mir genauso.

22/I hope this thread helped make the South China Sea issue clear and easy to understand, I also recommend checking out articles on this topic. While many focus on Taiwan, the South China Sea is China’s true priority (for now) as long as Taiwan doesn’t declare independence.

The world is fixated on Taiwan, but the South China Sea (SCS) is where China is playing its long game. If you care about global trade, security, and geopolitics, this is the crisis you can't ignore. Let me break it down 👇 1/22
