I was invited to watch Nolan's Odyssey, which I wasn't intending on seeing because my gut told me I wouldn't like it. Ultimately I was right and I kinda would like to elaborate but don't feel like writing a huge thread. In some ways, I think Nolan didn't go far enough.

@deadredveloz Frankly, I'm not even sure if I would oppose generative AI for the purpose of background composition, I understand the argument regarding art "theft" and not wanting to feed this big corps libraries with your work, but personally I've always been anarchic when it comes to art.

@KarkasKras I think the problem is that the statement is so vague because AI encompasses so much, but the specification of publisher bans leads me to believe he is talking about some form of generative AI.

For some reason, people are ok with Asano using photographs and 3D modeling programs to create environments for his mangas, but they draw the line at AI use for the same purposes. Why? Did they not read the article or is AI somehow just too far in the tech tree to be ok.
Anime Updates@animeupdates

'GOODNIGHT PUNPUN' creator Inio Asano says AI restrictions are one reason he paused 'Mujina Into the Deep' "Mangaka are not allowed to use AI. But using AI actually drives up the quality by a mile... maybe it would be better to start drawing after they lift the ban."

@RespectElves I don't think it's an issue of being a fan or not, but Asano's work has always included technology in his process which gives his work that urban modern feeling. Sure, there are ways of using AI that I think would be lame, but people are getting angry entirely over speculation.

@NastyShlob You don't know how Asano plans to use AI, what if he just uses his photos and 3D structures to train AI and generate new angles, landscapes, etc in seconds?

@Vivi_casual Again, people are getting their pitchforks ready entirely over speculation, all Asano said is that right now publishers don't allow AI use for commercial work for copyright reasons, so he's waiting to see if in the future some AI use might be allowed to streamline his process

Those photos are taken manually and as far as I know, that guy has 3D modeling assistances for his backgrounds, which use they obviously consent to; A*I is trained by other's work without consent and regurgitated with no consistance nor quality standard. That's the problem

@deadredveloz People are completely speculating on how exactly Asano plans to use AI to streamline his process and getting angry at something that hasn't even happened yet. What I got from the interview is that he's waiting to see what publishers are willing to allow before trying new methods.

@KarkasKras It's a pretty obvious. There is a difference between taking a photo and using it or 3d modeling a world for a background to potentially generating it with AI. However, there is some hope that this isn't what he meant as he never goes into detail.

@leuartz Do you know exactly how Asano plans to use AI for his process? Can you describe it? Also, it's hilarious that you call photo-integration and 3D CG as "traditional", when it's anything but and it was also criticized by some as lazy and lacking soul by many back in the day.

Sometimes I use pictures I google to use as reference for environments, but often I would like to see a specific photo from a different angle, if AI could generate a new pov of a picture's environment, that'd be really cool me thinks.

@KarkasKras They grind those uranium rocks to each other to generate electricity. Water is used to cool and clean that uranium dust off. Then they just dump that radioactive water in rivers. It's awful.

@Full_MetalKaiju If this is indeed a universal problem with data centers (I doubt it is), it's more an issue of policy regarding energy pricing rather than the existence of DCs in of themselves. In fact, from what I can see some DCs fund grid upgrades and so on. You can have both.

@KarkasKras Data centers are bad because they cause residential energy bills to go up. They should simply be forced to subsidize residential bills and if they can't afford it then they shouldnt be built

@Matan_Vilensky If you want to criticize AI companies, you can and should do so, but it's counterproductive to do so with bad arguments based on false info and pure moral indignation.
