Super excited to finally share this work with the world! Here, we show how airway organoids from wildlife species can helps us elucidate patterns of susceptibility to viral infection (in this case, Influenza A H1N1 and H5N1). Feedback appreciated! biorxiv.org/content/10.648…

Identify. Attack. Resolve. The immune system follows a perfect defense program: ignore weak/self signals, attack true threats with force, then shut down to avoid damage. (1/2) science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

@BarakRotblat Yes! We've been exploring a few things not related viral tropism (the original purpose of this biobank), but if you have some ideas you'd like to test, do reach out :)

@KarlKochanowski i love your idea to make animal organiodes and of course the fact that you actually did it👏 i understand the medical need it is related to but just from a basic science point of view, there must be a bunch of cool stuff you can use them for

Here's a very recent example (out in EM&I), where we ask a simple question: can we use airway organoids to compare susceptibility to Influenza infections in taxnomically diverse species (incl. Endangered ones)? Short answer: yes! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Some background: we built this biobank as a general purpose tool for studying infectious diseases in various animal species. To date, our biobank has airway/intestinal organoids from 40+ species (including many wildlife ones).

What happens if you knock down every metabolic gene in E. coli? We measured the metabolome of 1515 CRISPRi strains. Result: metabolism behaves like traffic. Block an enzyme and metabolites pile up upstream. 🚗🚗🚗 New paper 🧵

The 3 hardest things to learn as a scientist: 1. Trust the data.. especially when it’s not what you expected, 2. Trust the data.. allowing it to change your direction, 3. Trust the data.. but not too much: test with new data at every turn.
