Overheard: Being a woman is kind of like being a cyclist in a city where all the cars represent men. You're supposed to be able to share the road equally with cars, but that's not how it works. The roads are built for cars and you spend a great deal of physical and mental energy being defensive and trying not to get hurt. Some of the cars want you to get hurt. They think you don't have any place on the road at all. And if you do get hurt by a car, everyone makes excuses that it's your fault.

It is insane that men are openly and actively the main predators of women, while sincerely believing they are the main protectors of women.

“It’s just locker room talk”. We know. That’s the damn problem. It’s always locker room talk. It’s always rape jokes. It’s always “boys will by boys”. It’s never “I’m sorry.” It’s never “that was disrespectful”. It’s never respectful of women .

I don’t want the email of 50 words summarized by AI. I don’t want to know my biological age. I don’t want the wearable telling me when I should be happy. I don’t want the Bluetooth toothbrush gamifying brushing my teeth. I don’t want my trash can to be “smart”. I don’t want my Air Fryer connected to WiFi. I don’t want an app for my coffee maker. I don’t want my refrigerator sending me push notifications. Enough.

Routine sexual abuse of teenage girls isn't the prerogative of decadent elites, immigrant grooming gangs, polygamous cults etc etc. Every women's rights activist I ever met, from every part of the world, has stories about this from her community. Ordinary men do this, everywhere.

I respect the right of men to single-sex spaces; whether gay groups or men's sheds. But bitter experience shows that there are some men who bond over abusing women & children. Meanwhile, women-only space is generally to escape from those same horrors. We are not the same.

In patriarchy men treat each other with love, care, admiration and compassion, while brutalising women like slaves. This comes out strikingly in Epstein files, how gently these men spoke to one another, as they conspired to carry out unspeakable violence against women and girls.

I do wish that as a society we would review collectively our policy of fawning over rich, powerful men, and ignoring all their obvious proclivities, in the hope of a bit of gravy from the train 🤢
