The importance of modelling and deliberate practice, and wider reading and research - a big shout out to @KatePretsell whose blogs were also incredibly useful and helped a lot. 5/

🧵It was a wonderful experience to speak at #LitdriveCPD25 @LitdriveUK on Saturday, about using a sentence level approach to develop students’ writing. But as I made clear, I wasn’t just talking about improving writing; I was talking about improving thinking. 1/9

@ESharp79 I think really strong answers identify how something early on (in 2024's paper: the heat) sets up a later event (the argument). Making connections across the text like this can elevate an answer so much more than simply mapping the tension spikes/ dips and tonal shifts.

@BVCLib @SparxReader spending a decent amount of time reading but still getting the qs wrong. In this instance, your first port of call would be to sit with the pupil and hear them read out loud to you, before watching them attempt the qs (with no support from you). X probably not the best place for/

For anyone interested in @SparxReader and its implementation at secondary school, I am doing a webinar on Tuesday afternoon. I'll be interviewed and there'll be a Q&A. We have c. 130 attendees already, so join us if you're keen to hear more of what we do @TrinityAcademyL!

@doc_kristy Hi Kristy - that is my extreme ignorance at play assuming that, post-deadline, it would be ok to share some thoughts (when is the exam no longer 'live'?). Would the summer holidays/September be a more appropriate time for this sort of thing to be posted?

Q4. Do less: the extent to which pupils agree/disagree doesn’t really matter if their argument is forceful and coherent. Worry less about encouraging a balanced response.

Q4. Do more: where pupils stayed on track with their evaluative inference throughout a paragraph, answers felt really robust and coherent. Writing that *over-communicated* a particular opinion - like a golden thread throughout the guts of the analysis - really sung.
