Consumer genetic test results ‘causing unnecessary breast cancer alarm’… this is why pre- and post-test counselling is crucial! theguardian.com/society/2023/s…

@lexlanham I’ve thought about this tweet too many times to count. 🤯 After a year of daily using my 5yo’s take home/bring back folder this never occurred to me. This is going to be a game changer for my organization.

last year my third grader had a folder that she brought to & from school every day & one side said "take home" & the other side said "bring back" & i am here to tell you that this 2-pocket folder approach is useful at any age, such as adulthood

That false-positive rate 🫣 Scary to think people are making important healthcare decisions based on inaccurate information. Beware the harms of direct to consumer genetic testing. Genetic testing should only be preformed by experts capable of interpreting results.
Ed Esplin, MD, PhD@EdEsplin

"Among the people [w/ #DTC at-home screens] who tested positive for non-founder #BRCA mutations, 89.7% [had] false-positive results. A false-positive result means the #genetic test shows you have a genetic mutation when you really don’t." - #JamieDePolo @ BreastCancer.org @US_FDA states "Consumers & health care professionals should not use the [#DTC] test results to determine any treatments, including anti-hormone therapies and prophylactic removal of the breasts or ovaries. Such decisions require confirmatory [#clinical #genetictesting]" breastcancer.org/research-news/… ascopubs.org/doi/10.1200/PO… @JCOPO_ASCO @Invitae #access #reducedisparities #clinical #germlinetesting #precisionmedicine #precisionprevention

What did #AYA misunderstand? ✨5/21 (24%) did not remember 🧬results ✨Over- or underestimated their own or offspring’s risk for cancer ✨Health behaviors to mitigate risk ✨Several confused tumor surveillance w/ survivorship surveillance for relapse/tx late effects

Today @WilliamLamberth, a Tennessee state representative, asked students protesting gun violence which gun they’d like him to use when shooting them: “If there’s a firearm out there you’re comfortable being shot with, please show me which one it is.” huffpost.com/entry/willam-l…
