One teacher I spoke to recommends the @voice21oracy Nesting then Traverse method: giving children time to think before speaking (Nest), then 'speed date' their way through other children to hear their views but in a low stakes way (Traverse), before providing their own opinion

Super interested in how technology is supporting assessment of traditionally difficult to measure human skills like communication, creativity and critical thinking....

Listening ladder to support reluctant speakers: focus, be still, eye contact, nod, ask questions, summarise....🪜

@voice21oracy @stottcrates @_TheFEA @Skills_Builder @YEUK2012 Interesting how the feeling of AI increasing importance of Oracy education increased throughout the discussion !

At Speaking Summit listening to new Voice 21 CEO @klparadine.
I'm struck by how their Oracy approach is deeper than just talking tools, it's a cultural change across a school (teachers, students, parents) to helping children feel listened to and be empowered. ♥️

Should parents be responsible for all this?
46% of pupils are unable to sit still, 38% struggle to play or share with others, 37% cannot dress themselves, 29% cannot eat or drink independently and 28% are swiping books.

@EducEndowFoundn Report states that metacognition should not be taught in isolation rather embedded into other subjects. Is same true for other 21st century skills e.g. Oracy, Creativity, Leadership, Empathy etc?

"Some teachers think they need to teach metacognitive approaches in... ‘thinking skills’ sessions... metacognitive strategies should be taught in conjunction with specific subject content as pupils find it hard to transfer these generic tips to specific tasks."

I like this question as it gets us thinking about our voice as a lasting legacy not just a current device

Impressive. But what is the point? Is such vast knowledge accumulation to pass 28 A level exams truly going to help with life success, happiness and productivity in a 21st century world?

"People say that Estonia, the new education ‘superpower’, is ‘competence-based’ and must be opposed to our ‘knowledge-rich’ model in England. They clearly have not read the Estonian national curriculum on which that nation’s current success rests. The two are uncannily similar. "

Finally, we can all move on from the tiresome 'engagement is a poor proxy for learning' nonsense. schoolsweek.co.uk/lets-finally-e… "All the evidence from international comparisons says we should ensure the school curriculum is knowledge-rich *and* engaging."

@historytastic Is the problem having to scribble an update in a tatterred and easy to lose book? What if it was quick and easy to do in an app (not mine, just one I've seen)?

@beckycarlzon Examining what....?
Heard an interesting thought this week that AI could finally help us test previously abstract skills like creativity and critical thinking
