Every time I call out the blatant racism of the convicted felon, adjudicated rapist, and son of a klansman in the White House and the MAGA takeover of a major political party, some white folks — and a few Black, sycophantic, tap dancers — rush to say, “So you must be a Democrat.” Wrong. I’m an Independent. And I criticize Democrats just as sharply when they fail Black people or take our votes for granted. Let’s be clear: racism in America is not a Democrat or Republican problem — it is a WHITE problem. That is the common thread that runs through slavery, Jim Crow, redlining, police terror, mass incarceration, voter suppression, and the ongoing dehumanization of Black people. Historically, southern Democrats were the party of slavery and Jim Crow. But history didn’t stop there. When Democrats embraced civil rights, white supremacists didn’t repent or disappear — they realigned. Strom Thurmond in other racist segregationists didn’t stop being racist when they switched parties; they just found a new political home. And today, the party that welcomes agent orange’s “very fine people,” attacks voting rights, criminalizes protest, strips healthcare from those in need, erases Black history, defunds programs for vulnerable populations, deports non white immigrants, and traffics in racial grievance tells us exactly where Jim Crow’s spirit lives now. White racism is not confined to one party. There are racist Democrats, racist Republicans, and racist Independents. Racism is embedded in white America and sanctified by a white Christian church that has chosen power over prophecy, empire over Jesus, and whiteness over righteousness. And just like every era before, there will always be Black collaborators — politicians, preachers, and so-called Christians — willing to sell their souls for proximity to whiteness, protection, or profit. Stop trying to launder racism through party labels. Tell the truth. America’s original sin is white supremacy — maintained by the vast majority of white Americans, whether through open racism or silent complicity, and a white Christian church that chooses comfort over repentance. Until that truth is confronted, no party label will absolve this nation.
