Today, somebody asked me who proposed to whom when my husband and I got engaged, and as I told them the story of how it all happened, it reminded me how truly lucky I am, and how few happy stories I hear on a day-to-day basis. So with all of that in mind, I thought I’d share it with you good folks if for no other reason than to have a public record of the most wonderful thing that’s ever happened to me.
When we were dating, Tony and I bonded over cheese…naturally. We both LOVE cheese—every weekend when I went up to see him, I’d bring a king’s ransom of delicious cheese with me, and we even made some ourselves in our little kitchen in the mountains. To this day, it’s still our favorite thing, and we’ve been known to blow our entire grocery budget in the dairy section if the selection is good.
Anyway, I used to text him every morning when I got up, and I’d always end my message with some sort of cheese-ism. I love you like the sharpest pecorino. I love you like the funkiest Stilton. Silly, I know, but it became a thing, so I had no problem leaning into it lol.
Well, one day I came home and there was a cheeseboard set out on the table. Now, this wouldn’t have been surprising, necessarily, but their names sounded a bit familiar. The tangiest feta. The sharpest pecorino. The most heart-stopping triple cream brie.
Took me a moment to realize what was going on, but by the time I figured it out, there was a wonderful man on his knee offering me a ring. Of course, I said yes. But I also said “hold on a second” and went to get the ring I had already bought for HIM and had stashed away in my sock drawer. I guess great minds think alike.
So, that’s the story about the day we proposed to each other. And as you can see, even the cat got in on the act. I realize you didn’t ask for this, but even I feel the need to write about happy endings sometimes, so consider this a positive little catharsis and a reminder to myself about how lucky I am, because that kind of thing is easy to forget when the whirlwind of life comes through. Thank you, Tony, and I still love you like the smokiest Gouda.
