📍SENEGAL 🚨 Front Line Defenders expresses its deep concern over the deteriorating situation of LGBTQ+ rights defenders in Senegal due to the increased criminalisation and punishments for defending LGBTQ+ rights. An amendment to the Penal Code adopted and signed into law in March 2026 significantly increases punishment for sexual relations between people of the same gender, including harsh 5–10 year prison sentences and fines of €3,000 - €15,000 (CFA 2–10 million). The amended law also specifically targets HRDs and civil society organisations by criminalising solidarity with LGBTQ+ persons. Not enough people are talking about this. Hungary’s incoming PM has said that Viktor Orbán used Hungarian government funds to help finance CPAC, the flagship networking event for GOP candidates, members of Congress, and conservative media in this country. Under U.S. law, that is not just a Hungarian problem. Foreign governments are barred from spending money in American elections, and Americans are forbidden from soliciting or accepting it. If these allegations are true, this is a direct attack on the integrity of American democracy. We need a full investigation by Congress, the FEC, and the DOJ. The American people deserve to know exactly what flowed from Orbán’s government into this country’s political ecosystem, who was on the receiving end, and what it bought. ms.now/opinion/new-hu…

The introduction of the Protection of Sovereignty Bill, 2026 creates a difficult situation that affects all NGOs in Uganda. By labeling vital work as ‘undue influence,’ the bill follows a pattern that started with the Anti-Homosexuality Act. At that time, many in civil society stayed quiet because they thought the law didn’t affect them; however, that silence created a path for the broader shrinking of civic space we see now. Today, this pressure is reaching the very organizations everyone relies on for healthcare, education, and human rights.

Today, two women stand in a Ugandan court facing life imprisonment. Their prosecution under the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 is a grave violation of human dignity and a direct attack on the constitutional right to privacy. No Ugandan should face a lifetime behind bars for their private lives or personal identity. These baseless charges must be dropped and both women released immediately; justice must prevail. 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇬

These two women should be home with their families and loved ones, yet the court is detaining them further until 8th April. Their bail application was not heard because the Chief Magistrate is "out of office," leaving their lives on hold.
