In residency, I’d work 12 straight days to get a “golden weekend”—two days off.
This weekend, I have 4 days off without even being on vacation.
To anyone in training: Hang on. More time is coming. You can craft a life with meaningful work & time for the people you love, too.

Remember, pepper spray is oil based. If you get sprayed DO NOT rub your eyes. Immediately blink as much as you can to wash out some of the oil with your own tears. Then, wash your eyes with baby shampoo or dilute dishwashing soap and rinse copiously. Water alone won't do much. Also, take out your contacts.

NEJM: residents these days don’t stay late for patient care time, want wellness days, and have cognitive dissonance between work and wellbeing. Nothing we do makes them happy.

UPDATE:
The court issued its full opinion in the USMLE cheating case… which can best be characterized as a broad skepticism for the plaintiff’s claims and legal theories.
The case isn’t *officially* over… but it’s hard to see a path to a comeback.

UPDATE: Last week, a Nepali doctor filed a class action lawsuit against the National Board of Medical Examiners, alleging discrimination based upon national origin and requesting that invalidated USMLE scores be restored while examinees appeal. Today, the NBME responded. (🧵)

On Thank a Resident Day, here are a few things you may not know:
1. Residents work 60-80+ hours/week & make around $12-18 per hour. They get no extra pay for extra (residency) shifts.
2. They often work 28 hours straight & can be sleep deprived for much longer on “home call.”

A brief update on the USMLE cheating scandal: This week, a Nepali doctor and Match applicant whose Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 3 scores were all invalidated has sued the NBME. The NBME will respond by February 19, and the court will render a decision by February 21. (🧵)
