Imane was born female. That means her chromosomal pattern, gonads, internal reproductive structures, and developmental pathway were all aligned with female sex at birth. She was not “male with SRY,” nor was she born with a condition like 5‑alpha‑reductase deficiency. Nothing in her medical history matches that pattern. What she does have is a DSD a Difference in Sex Development. DSDs are a broad category of naturally occurring variations in how sex characteristics develop. They can affect hormone production, hormone sensitivity, genital development, or secondary sex characteristics, but they do not change the person’s sex at birth. A female infant with a DSD is still female. A male infant with a DSD is still male. The condition modifies development; it does not rewrite the underlying sex. This is why medical organisations treat DSDs as variations within sex categories, not as evidence that someone is “actually the opposite sex.” For example: A girl with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) is still female, even if she has elevated androgens. A girl with androgen‑related DSDs is still female, even if her hormone profile differs from typical ranges. A girl with atypical genital development is still female; the variation is anatomical, not a change of sex. DSDs do not erase sex. They demonstrate that sex development is biologically diverse, not mechanically binary. The claim that “he has a Y chromosome with SRY” is simply wrong in Imane’s case. She does not have a Y chromosome. She does not have SRY. She does not have a condition that would place her in the category of XY DSDs. Her DSD is one that occurs in females, not males. People often confuse DSDs with transgender identity or with conditions like 5‑ARD because they assume any variation must mean someone is “really male.” That assumption is scientifically incorrect. DSDs occur in both sexes, and the sex of the person is determined by the overall developmental pathway, not by one hormone, one gene, or one variation. Imane’s developmental pathway was female. Her DSD affects how her body responds to hormones, not her sex. That’s why she was raised female, treated medically as female, and recognised clinically as female. Her condition does not change that.
