Can anyone recommend me their favourite historical novels set in the 18th century? (Not written in the 18th century).

I've done a long & detailed thread responding to some of this, trying to give some background, to offer something more than the 'students are incapable of reading big books any more!' view.

Apparently universities are having to teach English literature students how to concentrate for long enough to read lengthy novels. I have to ask, what makes a person who's incapable of reading long novels decide that studying literature at degree level is for them?

A REQUEST: if you have cited or used either my critical or creative work - or put it on a reading list - or used it to inform your practice of any kind in any way - the weirder the better - pls let me know, for eminently guessable Reasons

Writers! Whether you're hoping for a book deal or not, if you were to attend an event about finding your readers that ISN'T just 'get a book deal', what kinds of things would you want to know? How to be your own publicist? How to work with bookshops? Crowdfund?.. Let me know!

@AkiSchilz How to construct or join a community in which books are discussed and readings held, including small press and seff-published works. Poetry does this well, prose not so much.

@IanDunt It disregards biodiversity concerns entirely. The comparison with France disregards the difference in landmass.

The Draghi Report on the future of European competitiveness clearly states: decarbonisation & competitiveness are 2 sides of the same coin. If we want to keep jobs, innovation & companies in the EU, we need massive investments in the ecological transition. Time is running out.

@drdhiggins Yes! Podarcis siculus campestris. Hard to see whether male or female. Blue spots along the side would indicate male.

Italian wall lizard (I think), Modena. Lots of these fabulous creatures in the park, although only one allowed me a photo.

We’re off to a great start at the @ASLEUKI early career conference with a thought-provoking panel on “Connecting to landscapes and Post-Attentiveness” with Anne Gallagher, Toby Horkan, Andrew Lee, and Lissie Carlile.

@OliveFSmith It has to mean real rootedness in more than one discipline, including an understanding of what is controversial in both. Jonathan Kramnick is good on this, from a genuinely intellectually ambitious viewpoint, in Paper Minds.

Also, on a work note, what does 'interdisciplinary' mean to you? Doing some thinking on this at the moment.

@NoreenMasud I would imagine that they are captive-bred, and that preparation for the releases has been going on for years. The legal populations come from imported European animals.
