I've done a long & detailed thread responding to some of this, trying to give some background, to offer something more than the 'students are incapable of reading big books any more!' view.

Apparently universities are having to teach English literature students how to concentrate for long enough to read lengthy novels. I have to ask, what makes a person who's incapable of reading long novels decide that studying literature at degree level is for them?

Not sure I've ever heard an award acceptance speech that has made me want to go and buy a book as quickly as this one 👏👏👏

@NoreenMasud This year and last I used A Flat Place as an MA in Creative Writing set text in the Narrative Non-Fiction module.

@AkiSchilz How to construct or join a community in which books are discussed and readings held, including small press and seff-published works. Poetry does this well, prose not so much.

@IanDunt It disregards biodiversity concerns entirely. The comparison with France disregards the difference in landmass.

It's really good. I disagree with a lot of it, and find a lot of it simplistic, but it's a properly important contribution.

We’re off to a great start at the @ASLEUKI early career conference with a thought-provoking panel on “Connecting to landscapes and Post-Attentiveness” with Anne Gallagher, Toby Horkan, Andrew Lee, and Lissie Carlile.

I’m proud to be one of 1,176 letter co-signatories calling on MPs to back the #CANBill in this week’s private members’ bill ballot. The time for science-led legislation to tackle the climate-nature crisis is now. @Ed_Miliband @SteveReedMP zerohour.uk/scientist_lett…

@OliveFSmith It has to mean real rootedness in more than one discipline, including an understanding of what is controversial in both. Jonathan Kramnick is good on this, from a genuinely intellectually ambitious viewpoint, in Paper Minds.

@NoreenMasud I would imagine that they are captive-bred, and that preparation for the releases has been going on for years. The legal populations come from imported European animals.
