#OTD 14 January 2005, ESA's #Huygens probe landed near the Xanadu region on Saturn's moon #Titan; humankind's only landing accomplished (to date) in the outer Solar System, the farthest landing from Earth a spacecraft has ever made, and also the first landing on a moon other than our own.

President Nixon formally endorsed plans for the Space Shuttle #OTD in 1972. Following the announcement, then NASA Administrator James Fletcher said, the reusable Space Shuttle “will change the nature of what man could be in space.” go.nasa.gov/3twesYy
To say that my first sight of the Earth from orbit was breathtaking or magnificent still seems such a paltry way to describe what I saw and felt. The best I can do is liken the feeling to having someone turn on the lights after having lived in semi darkness for years. I had never seen anything quite so clearly or with such rich color!
As we look forward to the future of space exploration in 2024, let us remember some of the brave men and women of @NASA who we lost in 2023:
-Frank Borman (aged 95)
-Walter Cunningham (aged 90)
-Ken Mattingly (aged 87)
-Karol Bobko (aged 85)
-Mary Cleave (aged 76)

Robert Goddard conducted the first rocket test flight at his new laboratory in Roswell, New Mexico #OTD in 1930. His liquid fuel rocket reached a height of 610 meters (2,000 ft).

Microgravity has a promising future for medical research. On my last mission, Ax-2, we were able to grow stem cells on the @Space_Station, building on the research of Ax-1 and previous research I helped with during Expedition 50/51/52. In space, stem cells are able to grow free of gravity's restrictions which eliminates many of the challenges we face producing them here on Earth.
Today in 1932, #StarTrek actor Nichelle Nichols was born. Her groundbreaking role as Lt. Uhura made her an inspiration to many and in 1977, she worked with NASA to recruit women and people of color. We reflect on her life and legacy: s.si.edu/48fmF2d

Hey, That's us! From Mars?
This is certainly not the most impressive view of Earth and the Moon from a space, but this image from #MarsExpress still manages to capture that poignant ‘Pale Blue Dot’ feeling.
