Pope Leo has blessed a broken statue of the Virgin Mary found in a dumpster by former Chicago radio host Kevin Matthews. Matthews discovered the statue during a dark time in his life and says its appearance caused him to rediscover his Catholic faith. He saw himself in the broken statue, and decided to save and repair it. He began taking it around the area and visited hundreds of churches, sharing his story of redemption through a worn statue. Yesterday, Matthews finally made his way to the Vatican with the Broken Mary. Pope Leo says he was moved by the story and the statue’s meaning. “How many people – perhaps we ourselves – feel like they are worthless or broken. It is as if their light has been hidden. Jesus, however, proclaims a God who will never throw us away, a Father who cares for our names and our uniqueness.” The Pope then blessed the statue and approved the title “Our Lady of the Broken,” affirming it as a sign of hope for all who feel discarded, forgotten, or wounded. Kevin Matthews has a documentary about his journey that is now streaming, called “Broken Mary: The Kevin Matthews Story.”
