The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 — signed into law March 2026 — prioritises UK medical graduates for NHS training places. Around 138,400 licensed doctors who qualified abroad currently work in the UK — 42% of the total medical workforce. Without them, the NHS collapses. Full stop. The reason is simple: jet fuel is getting too expensive to justify certain routes, and the Middle East conflict shows no sign of letting up. They're not alone. Lufthansa just axed 20,000 short-haul flights through October. SAS is cutting 1,000 in April. This is becoming an industry-wide problem. KLM is being smart about it though, targeting busy corridors like London and Düsseldorf where passengers can get rebooked on the next flight, sometimes within the hour.
