@ldatko @JeffcoSchoolsCo I’m out of the loop. How is Joe Rogan that bad? Is this a student-created presentation? (A-West, Class of ‘97 here)

Why on earth did my old outlet allow a kid reporter to give uncritical coverage of England’s far-right T*mmy R*binson and friends?

Well, you know, it’s always nice to know that if the whole priest-scholar thing doesn’t work out, I’ve got a great job waiting for me at the… [checks notes] Cat Hospital of Metairie, Louisiana

Type of guy who seems to have principles but he's just very good at justifying his extremely disagreeable attitude.

@pluant McCarrick wasn’t ever a personal papal envoy to China, was he? His trips were generally in his personal capacity, IIRC.

@ryanburge One secular take on the conversion of the Roman Empire was that Christians would disproportionately show up to nurse the sick, console the dying, help the poor, raise abandoned infants, etc.

In my new book The Vanishing Church, I tell the story about a church service I attended in college. Young guy comes in late with his girlfriend and baby. During Prayers of People he speaks up and says, "I lost my job and I'm not sure I can pay rent." "Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer." As the service ends, an older guy comes up to that young man and says, "I own the lumber yard and you can come work with me tomorrow." It's not magic. It's how faith communities operate.
Reddit Lies@reddit_lies

Reddit atheists discovering how much the church does for the community is one of my favorite things.

@brandan_buck Surely American employers have barred headshots in applications to preempt alleged/real racial bias in screening applicants.

@JLLiedl Some of the smaller Catholic colleges, especially on the Newman Society list, do focus on vocations in their publicity. But has anybody compared their numbers to legacy Catholic institutions?

@BradWilcoxIFS Has anyone adequately tracked the trends in the “stoned on the couch” demographic?

It is true that many more men are “failing to launch” today than in prior generations. Women now outnumber men in higher education by a ratio of almost 3 to 2. Fewer young men are working, and a rising number are stoned on the sofa. Fully 1 in 5 are living with their parents. For a young woman hoping to marry, these trends shrink the pool of available and attractive partners.

"It's All Men's Fault. . . From Matt Yglesias at Slow Boring arguing “the weak link in convincing more people to settle down earlier is, in fact, men” to Anna Sussman lamenting “the state of men today” in The New York Times to The Atlantic’s Olga Khazan opining on X that “I truly think the decline in marriage is really a problem of men failing to launch,” the idea that America’s retreat from marriage is all about male malaise, especially among working-class guys, is clearly popular on the left." deseret.com/opinion/2026/0…

@DanMulhall Stories of the Great Hunger continually arise in my family tree. The latest: a boy who emigrated alone at *the age of 12* in 1846 or ‘47. He was fortunate to reunite with his family and neighbors, including his future wife, who would emigrate and settle together in St. Louis.

I’m still mad about the time I went to the soon-to-close Tattered Cover expansion on the east side of Denver and the clerk recommended I give my niece a kids’ book where the boy was in a dress.

I have yet to be to a goofy, irreverent ordinary (Novus Ordo) form of the mass in England Not necessarily beautiful, but all have followed largely the same rubrics and are respectful in their celebrations Why does the American Church suffer the problems it does???

although this sounds slightly deranged, you could launder it through some spiritual belief in the power of images or something, it would change the way people dress, act, and socialize in a way that it's not hard to imagine other people on the outside becoming envious.

i think that if some bizarro-theocracy took over and declared that we could keep the internet, but devices with internet can only display text and images of text, it would be an interesting potential path out of our accidental techno-phone enslavement.

@sweater__weathr @PTBwrites It pops up in some places. A woman who does relationship education with troubled young people once told me how baffled she was when she was giving some pretty smart advice and the kids snarked back that she was being "heteronormal."
