We had a fun time hosting Junjie Guo @guo_lab here at the University of Arizona, learning more about C9-ALS/FTD and the cherry blossoms in New Haven! 🌸

This is a really fascinating paper showing that RNA from dietary sources can actually promote a healthy proteome by mildly stimulating autophagy pathways that keep proteins in working order (in worms) nature.com/articles/s4146…

The session on Emerging Science from the Next Generation of ALS Researchers highlighted powerful updates from young ALS researchers supported by our fellowship programs. These researchers focused on neurons and TDP-43, a protein linked to ALS.
Dr. Miriam Linsenmeier explains that "When we think about the goal for potential therapeutics, we want to solve two problems. One is to inhibit the accumulation of the TDP-43 protein in neurons, and the second is to correct the mislocalization of TDP-43 to restore physiological function."

At #ALSNexus hosted by the @alsassociation to present our research on neuronal aging and TDP-43 mislocalization! My talk will be tomorrow morning in the "Emerging Science" session, and I will also be at poster #3 tomorrow evening 🔬

Together, our results demonstrate that damaged mitochondrial initiate an RNA-based stress pathway that activates chronic stress in aged neurons. We hope that these results will help us develop new therapeutics to prevent or treat dementia or other diseases. 7/

I am excited to share the second half of my postdoctoral work with @yeo_lab! We found that neuronal aging leads to the accumulation of mitochondrial double-stranded RNA, which triggers the chronic stress response. 1/ biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
