"The Life of Malchus, the Captive Monk"
St. Jerome, circa 390 A.D.:
VII. He is inspired by the example of ants.
After a long interval, while I sit alone in the desert and see nothing but the sky and the earth, I began to silently ponder with myself and among many things I also remember the company of monks, and especially the face of my father, who had trained me, held me, and lost me. And thus thinking, I watch a herd of ants swarming along a narrow path. I see burdens greater than bodies. Others were pulling certain seeds of herbs with the forceps of their mouths; others were digging the soil out of the ditches and blocking the channels of water with their embankments. The latter, mindful of the coming winter, cut off the seeds brought in, lest the sodden soil turn the granaries into grass; the latter carried the deceased bodies with solemn mourning. And what is more surprising in such a large procession: as they went out, they did not hinder those who came in; on the contrary, if they saw anyone under a bundle and collapsed under a burden, they put their shoulders on their shoulders and helped him. What many? That day presented me with a beautiful spectacle. Hence, remembering Solomon sending us to the cleverness of ants and awakening lazy minds under such an example, I began to tire of seeking the cells of captivity and monastery and to long for the likeness of those ants, where one labors in the midst and, since nothing is anyone's own, everything is for everyone.

Thankfully, Gen Z is extremely keen on confession. 🙏
Matthew Schmitz@matthewschmitz
The greatest change in Catholic life since the 1950s has been not the introduction of the new Mass, nor the declarations of Vatican II, but the virtual disappearance of confession.
