@jrhuddles @KevinTFrazier When do I get a collab opportunity???

.@KevinTFrazier and I finally officially collaborate on a piece this one analyzing some of the most concerning elements of #AI regulation in the nearly 300 page discussion draft AI bill that dropped yesterday cato.org/blog/latest-ai…

AI policy is distinct from a Jackson Pollack painting in a key way: throwing more at it doesn’t make it any better.

Lots of folks talk about training models to be "moral."
Small issue: what's moral to one American may be morally wrong to another.
Path forward? Competition. Rather than try to direct all models to be "moral," let's encourage them to be transparent about their values and let consumers pick the one that's right for me.

Had a blast chatting about all things AI, policy, regulations, and healthcare with @KevinTFrazier yesterday! Thanks to the Meta folks in DC for hosting us 🙌

AI has the potential to reduce economic inequality, expand access to expertise, and address cost-of-living concerns
but only if we manage to update laws that unnecessarily shield guilds from competition.
One immediate policy reform? Follow the lead of Arizona and embrace universal licensing recognition.
Occupational licensing acts as a hidden tax on consumers, estimated at 3-16 percent. For lawmakers keen to embrace the affordability agenda, start by taking on professions that have shielded themselves with legal moats.

"If current trends continue, data centers in the United States could require between 697 million and 1.45 billion gallons of additional peak water capacity per day by 2030 — an amount equivalent to New York City's daily water consumption."
Let's put this in context...to continue to use the internet, AI, and exist in the 21st century, we will need to allocate as much water to data centers as we do to NYC.
Seems like a fair deal. Am I missing something, @AndyMasley?

Must read (well, if you care about federalism and AI policy). Key quote:
When a state uses its autonomy to harm other states and their residents, it threatens not merely judicial policy preferences for free trade, but federal solidarity itself. Imposing costly externalities—for example, by shunting dangerous and costly traffic to other states—contradicts states’ duties not to harm each other or each other’s residents.
Creating regulatory mismatches to bar residents of other states access to a state’s market undermines federal solidarity by obstructing the national marketplace.
And discriminating against other states’ citizens threatens nested citizenship, with its embedded guarantee of free movement.
Kudos to @ProfRuthMason & @efieldingd for a great article via @NotreDameLRev

This is wonderfully brave, @dantemoore05. #GoDucks
If you're looking for a way to support teens and address mental health issues, let's talk about lowering barriers to care / reducing licensing restrictions.
State legislatures meet for just a few months each year, it's imperative they direct their attention to the most efficacious solutions.
