Once upon a time, pricing was simple. Items would sit at full price until they didn't sell, then they'd get slapped with a clearance sticker (like Halloween Candy on Nov. 1st). Now, that model is getting replaced. Instead of one big markdown moment, prices are constantly shifting in real time based on demand and shopper behavior. It's less about the clearance rack and more about a live consumer experiment. As one economist put it, "You just have these constant price fluctuations, and that's how things will be moving forward." Another warned that shopping norms have "shifted under your feet." You're at a "disadvantage" if you don't know how to game the system and track the ups and downs. The winners are those plugged-in shoppers refreshing apps and price-matching while the losers are, well...everyone else.
