@clairlemon @sociologyWV It's funny - the general consensus is that men are privileged. At the same time, violent crime (and a lot of other male behaviours) is not something you do when the root cause of your problems is too much privilege. There's more going on! It's like... things are complicated!

I do want to remind everyone that Christopher Nolan is responsible for the most rightwing major studio film of all the time, The Dark Knight Rises. So perhaps we should wait to see The Odyssey before all making up our minds about it.

I remember learning as an undergrad history major at Hillsdale College 20-something years ago that significant portions of Martin Luther King Jr.'s PhD dissertation at Boston University were plagiarized. As a kid raised in public schools and propagandized to believe in the secular sainthood of MLK, I was shocked. (Later, I was even more shocked to learn of his string of adulterous affairs, sexual aberrations, and connections to the communist party.) That was the first moment it really dawned on me that everything, or nearly everything, I had learned in public school about American history was, if not an actually an outright lie, a lie by omission.

this is actually a good case for age of consent hypotheticals. This is a 19 year old girl who had sex with a 14 year old boyfriend. Let's assume the sex was consensual. 1. Should this be legal? 2. What should the punishment look like?

@DerekPederson3 Totally disagree here. A "democracy" where massive swaths of the adult population can't vote is really no such thing. The framers had some good, even radically good, ideas. The society they initially created was nothing to be proud and did in fact dissolve into Civil War

This is a dangerous and destructive viewpoint. It's great to celebrate Black Americans and the Civil Rights Movement but to deny its strong liberal ideological roots and the role the principles of the Framers had in that is, in my view, deeply anti-American.

I think one of my biggest difference with liberals is that Barack Obama handled Black Lives Matter extremely poorly and the result was inadvertently quite destructive to the country.
