Most people don’t realize the doctor who keeps you asleep during surgery is also the one who may save your life. 🫶 Anesthesiologists are involved in every stage of surgery. They assess patients before the operation, make sure they’re ready for surgery, manage care throughout the procedure and support recovery and pain control afterward. Their work is essential for keeping patients safe. At @UHN, anesthesiologist and researcher Dr. Sheila Riazi leads one of the top centres in the world studying malignant hyperthermia — a rare genetic condition that can trigger a severe reaction to certain anesthesia drugs. Without rapid treatment, it can turn a routine operation into a life-threatening emergency within minutes.
