@Abzybabzy Crimson Desert and Expedition 33 are both worth the time investment. Though CD is much more of a challenge and the two games are wildly different, graphical fidelity aside. Both black myth wukong and Stellar Blade were much maligned at launch but extremely solid games.

I feel like I wouldn’t have been able to have fully appreciated and enjoyed it when it just came out given all the noise around it. I feel like it’s going to be the same with Crimson Desert.

So I’ll be ruthlessly honest: Given a lot of what’s going on industry facing, I’ve been quite put off of games in general. It’s a shame, because it truly was one of my only forms of escape… Then I started playing Black Myth Wukong, and I’m loving the story, vibe and artistry.

@timeextension64 A sad day, one of my absolute favorite games as a kid was River City Ransom. Though Kishimoto didn’t direct that one (he directed the 1984 sequel), he created Kunio-kun who is a main protagonist in the Japanese version. He leaves behind a staggering legacy of legendary games.

@WeebyRevy @ComicGirlAshley Its an illusion, the game never let's you become truly evil. All choices are become the good guy, become the slightly less good guy good guy, become a non good guy but non bad guy, become squidward.

Is there actually a choice based game where your choices ACTUALLY REALLY matter? Like, the story is actually significantly different. No Telltale or LIS game has achieved this. LiS2 probably sold the illusion the best. Until Dawn and Heavy Rain maybe?

@TheColeBrew @GenePark I'm not going to make it 80 hours. The game is a blotchy, blurry mess without RR and RT. Hell, it even has ghosting without DLSS.

This will sound absurd but I’m 80 hours into crimson desert and I’m finally locked into the story. I’m surprised and excited by what’s happening, who’s doing what, and I’m very intrigued to see what happens next type shit. The random world building feels like it’s paying off.

@TheColeBrew @GenePark The thing is, if you are playing this game for the story as if you are playing an rpg, you are doing it wrong. But yes the story DOES pick up about 50 hours in.

@Cromwelp I cant agree. This is way more risk. You well know that most companies push against feature creep. Attempting to do everything you stand to lose so much more than if you stay safe with a few mechanics. There is a ton of potential benefit too though. High risk high reward imo,

Crimson Desert is fun to play, but it is such a cynical amalgamation of borrowed mechanics. It is Now That's What I Call Gaming plucked off a gas station shelf, for better & worse. Expect a lot more of this in premium & F2P. There is less risk in it.

@ProudBavaria Uh no. Some of the dialogue and va is brilliant and hilarious. The main story may be weak sure, but the game definitely isn’t lacking in personality for the npcs that inhabit the world.

@nuhre_ This game shouldn’t have worked as well it does. Scope creep is dangerous in games. But every once in awhile a dev team swings for the fences. But despite what the ceo says, the games this was modeled on are story light as well. It’s more about individual interactions.

@nuhre_ Undercooked is the last thing this game was. Overcooked would be a more reasonable statement. It’s scope creep personified, which makes it wild that they mostly pulled it off. The CEO dances around it but from what Powers has said, the game was always meant to be adventure first.

@IGN Well deserved community note. IGN has really helped perpetuate the narrative that all game journalists are lazy hacks focused on click through rate. It’s not true btw, but it’s gotten to the point that they are literally hurting everyone else in the space.
