I have a new piece in the April edition of Ring Magazine on the Inoue-Nakatani superfight, where I break down the matchup by each fighter's skills, advantages and disadvantages. The magazine hits bookshelves later this month and will also be available via digital subscription.

@jcleopardkungfu @Sean_Zittel Hopkins was universally recognized as champion by that time. He was bigger than the WBC. Merchant's point is that he should deal a blow to those parasites & stand up for the fans by rejecting their "pay to play" schemes. And Merchant was right.

@Kil787 @Sean_Zittel If you want to remain champion then you want to remain champion. Take that up with the sanctioning bodies, Merchant be damned.

I see this clip making the rounds and people shitting on Larry Legend again. Here’s B-Hop 3 years later showering Merchant with praise. People aren’t used to Larry’s style these days, cause he had a set of BALLS. Put some respect on his name like Bernard did, here. #Boxing

@GatecrasherUA It’s exactly the issue at hand. Larry’s criticism was about him fighting an unworthy mandatory & BHop defends the sanctioning body.

@Kil787 Possibly, but that's not an issue at hand. If the fight was at least decent-ish, none of this would've happened.

I've never been much of a fan of Bernard Hopkins, but Merchant is in the wrong here. It wasn't B-Hop's fault that fight stank as much as it did. "Bernard, aren't you embarrassed by this?" was uncalled for and just plain rude.

@GatecrasherUA Everyone before the fight knew Hakkar was completely unworthy to fight Hopkins. That’s the real issue.

@Kil787 I don't think anyone expected Hakkar to fight the way he did that night.

@jcleopardkungfu @Sean_Zittel That’s a fact. It’s also a fact that the mandatory was an undeserving fighter & Hopkins could have chosen to fight a stiffer challenge — belts be damned.

@Kil787 @Sean_Zittel It's not being a cheerleader to stick to facts. You know. Facts like fighters facing their mandatory to avoid being stripped.

@chrisrobwill Yep, this was when the WBO started to get a tiny bit more credibility. But everyone knew Bowe would dump it to fight for a real title. Moorer did the same a few years before.

Notable that this - a WBO heavyweight title fight - billed as “next stop on the road to the top”. These days billed as THE heavyweight title!

@snboxing @linusesq I don’t disagree with that. But an 8 or 8.5 is a pretty good movie.

@Kil787 @linusesq It's like an 8 or 8.5 out of 10. It's fine. It's watchable. But it's not a major work. Newman has probably been in ten movies that are both better and/or had more lasting impact.

He deserved it for the Verdict. Color of Money completely forgettable. Sorry Marty.

@Kil787 I saw it and I dont remember a thing about it TBH all these years later.... except a goofy series of "look at me I'm so clever" shots that reminded me of Donald Duck in Mathmaticsland!

@snboxing @linusesq I’m not saying it is. That’s the problem — too many people compare it to the Hustler or Scorsese’s other movies. Viewed in its own, it’s a very good movie.
