I'm currently mapping NYC's Bathroom Border, the zone in which bums, nons, and antisocial freaks are such a problem that businesses have to code-lock their bathrooms and force you to buy something to use them. Like the Peace and Quiet Map, the Bathroom Border gives you a very strong indication of how scuzzy a city or area is. Businesses having freely-accessible bathrooms where you aren't hassled to buy something is a sign of social trust and a local population that isn't overrun with homeless degenerates. I got the idea when I was in Montclair yesterday---which I mistakenly thought was a nice area, having not been there in over a decade---and the local Panera Bread had a code-locked bathroom. So far, I've mapped the Bathroom Border at the western and southern Essex County borders. Morris and Middlesex Counties do not appear to have any code-locked bathrooms, not even in crummy areas like Dover or Perth Amboy. I've also partially mapped the border in northernmost Bergen County, as Mahwah does not have code-locked bathrooms, nor do Orange and Rockland Counties over the border. I suspect the rest of the northern border will run through Bergen County, but I'm not sure where. All of NYC is within the border. MAYBE the southern/westernmost parts of Staten Island are excluded, but I haven't been there in over a decade either. I suspect the border's eastern fringe will be in Nassau County, but again, I don't know where. The southern part of Westchester County is almost certainly within the border. Your input is appreciated.

@lil_buffer @mattforney If you're in Midtown or Lower Manhattan, you can try for Penn Station, Grand Central, Herald Square, or World Trade Center. Otherwise, public parks may or may not have bathrooms that may or may not be open to the public.

@mattforney Have you been to NYC? All of manhattan is a no public bathroom zone. With no back alleys. Even the subway stations don't have public bathrooms. If you don't have cash for a bartender you're going to have to find a park or somewhere to relieve yourself outdoors
