@KathyMcDon40415 @MBDan7 That's not how med school applications work. For every 100 identical-on-paper applicants (GPA, extracurriculars, etc.) there are < 9 med school seats. Med school seats are linked to # of residency spots - can't have 10x more graduating med students than there are residency spots.
English

@MBDan7 Cousin great marks. Wanting to become a Doctor, has Applied twice. Not enough space for this Canadian but those high paying students, Welcome to Canada.
English

@WilliamN78037 @MBDan7 2025: Per CaRMS (Canadian Resident Matching Service), the overall match rate for CDN citizens graduating from CDN med schools to residency spots in Canada was 93.5%.
English

@MBDan7 Many Canadians studying in Canada also can not get a residency spot. Canadian MDs creating an artificial shortage.

Actually, make that 3 papers from @MitoMetabLab in the last 3 days 😎 @tmedQueens MSc alumna Dalia Miller's MASLD paper will be online soon in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism 🥳
I'm signing off for the weekend because I think I've wrung the good news sponge for the week!
English

In what must be some kind of record, @MitoMetabLab's @MiaSWilkinson, @tmedQueens PhD candidate, has had TWO papers accepted in the last 3 days!! Her review is available now, and her research paper describing her murine platelet work will be out soon! 🥳🥳 mdpi.com/1422-0067/26/2…
English

A superb team effort from Team @MitoMetabLab to submit two papers in the last 7 days! Watch this space for some good news 🤞

Another of my 'original trilogy' is on her way. Exceptionally proud of Dalia and Team @MitoMetabLab will can't wait to see what she does next!

@CulturedChem @ThePhDPlace Fair enough. It is something I just offer when meeting with students (I.e., "you are welcome to bring a support person/friend/colleague to listen to this meeting"), but I recognize how if it were a surprise, it could be interpreted that way (which would be unfortunate).
English

Agree. 1st year students should have some latitude to change groups, but a frank discussion with the advisor is a must, although I'd recommend against the support person as it might be viewed as antagonistic by the advisor. At this stage, if you feel you need a support person, just change groups

Anonymous Question:
Hey guys! I am a first year PhD student, i am struggling a lot with the lab members and my supervisor. He hasnt really given me a proper project. Our lab is working on a protein and he encourages everyone to try what they would like to do. I am finding it hard to work as i don’t have a defined boundary. Whenever i get an interesting result, some of my postdoc colleagues take it and work on it quicker than me and build up on it. They have also turned my supervisor against me on many occasions when i make mistakes. I feel very discouraged and anxious. I am worried about applying elsewhere because i don’t know who to put down as a reference. And also dropping out of a PhD wouldn’t look good on my CV (also not sure if anyone would take me as a PhD student if i have dropped out once). Any advice/support would be appreciated :))

@JeremyClarkson @Rugby1Peter Let them qualify in their actual F1 cars to determine starting order (maybe there's driver points involved), then the race is a Goodwood-esque Festival in historic/legacy vehicles (every team gets same equipment to wrap); winner gets cash purse (like Nascar all-star race).

Thursday's banquet was a special evening celebrating @tmedQueens student achievements. I am honored to receive this award. Thank you to my @MitoMetabLab students for nominating me and my mentors for their lessons - I hope to continue doing it "mostly right" 😊
