Alberta Emergency Alert
Alberta Emergency Alert@AB_EmergAlert·
This is an Alberta Emergency Alert. Environment Canada has issued a Tornado Watch. This alert is in effect for a large area in central Alberta, from Yellowhead County to Edmonton, south to Lacombe (see attached map). Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms which may produce tornadoes. Strong winds, large hail and heavy rain are also possible. Thunderstorms that develop this evening have the potential to produce a tornado. These thunderstorms will move east towards central Alberta through the evening. To report severe weather, send an email to ABstorm@ec.gc.ca, call 1-800-239-0484 or post reports on X using #ABStorm. In the event of a tornado, go indoors to a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows. A good place would be a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet. Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelter, and move to a strong building if you can. As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris. It is particularly dangerous to be on a small craft on the open water when lightning is occurring. @canada.ca=urn_oid_2.49.0.1.124.3298282320.2026.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">alberta.ca/aea/cap/2026/0… #ABemerg #ABtornado

When COVID-19 cases fall, protections often disappear before transmission does. That is how one wave quietly becomes the next. Breaking the cycle means keeping measures like masking, testing, and cleaner indoor air in place a little longer, until spread is truly under control. The tools exist. We have to use them long enough to work. whn.global/will-the-pande… #Pandemic #COVID19 #COVID #PublicHealth #InfectionPrevention #CollectiveAction #CommunityHealth #DiseasePrevention #GlobalHealth

COVlD Update - July 8, 2026 (US) The US has 7 hot spots presently, per CDC data (link in next). The Texas and Guam outbreaks persist. SE Florida has picked up. Other upticks are more isolated. Houston: We are keeping a close eye on Houston. The PMC map is conservative in depicting median very low levels (2 sites very high, 2 low, 4 very low). Harris County (Houston) had 67 sites report in May, but only 8 today, with 5 rising meaningfully to precipitously. The very high levels in the adjacent county of Fort Bend have fallen, whereas the very low levels in the adjacent county of Montgomery have risen quickly. Houston is basically teetering between a wave and a return to calm, and could flip either way (or may have already). With the World Cup, especially, everyone in the area should track this closely and continue to advance layered mitigation. We began encouraging boosters there a month ago. Florida: The wave in SE Florida has worsened steadily. California: The levels in Plumas (CA) are exceedingly high, similar to 2/3 the level of the national BA.1. Omicron surge. Different dashboards have shown different isolated hot spots across central/northern CA the past month. Nationally: Levels are still at their lowest in about 5 years. The states that were picking up early last summer (west coast, HI, Gulf South) have had more isolated or transitory increases thus far, which is a good sign. However, the data are lagging, most recently from June 27. The CDC update on July 17 will be most telling with regard to post-Independence Day increases. If no increase noted by July 24, we would be headed into a different place on COVlD. Any minimizing before then would be premature. There is no PMC Report this week due to the delayed CDC data. However, the interactive map *HAS* been updated; link in next.
