@HeatherBaranski @dogwoodblooms It's fun if you have the time but it takes too much time. Adam & Eve were way back! My sis-in-law's dad was Cherokee. Supposedly they walked into Alaska over 20K years ago. I paid up for DNA tests with FamilyTree and 23&me; I know some Europe stuff but that was just too much.
English

Because I know so much about our family history already, I’ve researched our Family Tree DNA records. Because my dad’s family were tall and dark, I was convinced they were part Cherokee since their farm was near the reservation. They were actually a Sephardic line out of Spain, who were part the Normans when they invaded England in 1066. They came to the US in the 1600s and to WNC in 1747. I ended up with more questions than answers. 🤣

Did you know a bunch of WNC hillbillies and their Tennessee friends are the ones who turned the tide on British control of the South? 🤔
It’s true!
On October 7, 1780, Patriot militiamen from western North Carolina and the Tennessee frontier met British Loyalist forces at Kings Mountain, right along the Carolina line. What followed was one of the fiercest, most decisive battles of the Revolution.
British Major Patrick Ferguson had threatened to burn the backcountry to the ground if locals didn’t lay down their arms—but instead of surrendering, those mountain men saddled up. They crossed the Blue Ridge, linked forces, and surrounded Ferguson’s troops on a steep, wooded ridge. The Loyalists’ high ground turned into a trap; the Patriots stormed up from all sides and took the mountain by sheer grit.
Ferguson was killed, his men overwhelmed, and the British grip on the South began to crumble.
Today, Kings Mountain National Military Park stands as a powerful reminder of that moment when the underdogs from the Carolina hills rose up, fought back, and helped turn the Revolution in America’s favor.
Never underestimate a hillbilly, y'all! 💯

@HeatherBaranski @dogwoodblooms Most different surnames I lose because they did not have enough money or education to keep up with such; even writing it in a Bible can only go so far. 1 surname that I'm direct kin a few times had money &. went to Dukes, Kings, Queens, popular people; some great some terrible.

I always tell people researching their genealogy that you’re going to find some good things and bad things. I’m probably descended from John Knox and other Scottish reformation ministers on mom’s side. Not so sure if one of the Ggrandpas and Ggrandmas on dad’s side were actually married. They stated they were in the census but I can’t find any record of it. 🤷🏼♀️ When they moved the county courthouse records though some were thrown away.

@dogwoodblooms Diced onions and Texas Pete are good on beans period; in my book. Ham hock is great meat and seasoning and cornbread is part of the ensemble.
English

Have you ever heard of soup beans?
When I was growing up in WNC, Mamaw and Papaw made meatless suppers once or twice a week.
Those meals usually consisted of soup beans seasoned with pork and various sides: fried taters with onions, cabbage, boiled taters, fresh sliced maters, homemade canned green beans, fried green maters, ramps, or wilted lettuce.
You never knew what sides would show up on the plate, but there would always be a variety—and the meal was guaranteed to come with a slice of cornbread.
Daddy liked his soup beans with a spoonful of mayo on top. Mamaw took hers with diced raw onion. Papaw doused his with Texas Pete.
I don’t know what made me think of soup beans today… I think I’m craving them. Which is weird. I ate so much of them during hard times that they started turning my stomach.
You don’t really hear the term “soup beans” in the eastern part of North Carolina. It makes my heart a little sad. “Pinto beans” sounds too plain.
Anyone else call them soup beans? 👀

@dogwoodblooms @HeatherBaranski You probably won't like everything you find out but without it happening exactly like it did, you would not be here! Some bastard kids made my brother cringe but not me! I like being here & I can see where a lady was young with a young neighbor & another was trying to survive.
English

@dogwoodblooms @HeatherBaranski Dad was a US History teacher & I always loved history. While studying about some of granddad's land, I joined Ancestry & did my DNA in 2015. That's when I found out people in those History books are US; those heroes have kin. Everyone should know their past kin; good or bad.
