I’ve just seen a tweet about the daycare fraud in Washington and Minnesota, where fake care centres were registered and paid millions in public money, yet didn’t exist. Fellow Kenyans, this is the same pattern happening in Kenya. In August, I came across a facility listed as WANTE NURSING HOME LIMITED. According to available records, it was established on 12 February 2025, applied for a Ministry of Health licence on 13 February, and was approved the very same day. In April, it received KSh 1,283 from SHA. Soon after, the payments jumped, including KSh 3.866 million, and in later months even more. In some cases, more than what established sub-county hospitals receive. When I tried to trace the facility, I ran into serious questions. There’s no publicly listed phone number, and the Ministry of Health records place its location at coordinates 3°02'16.3"N 40°58'44.3"E, which appears to be in a forested area in Mandera. I sent someone to confirm its existence at those coordinates, and they ended up in some thickets, almost being bitten by a snake. Nothing. And it was receiving more money than even Mandera Referral Hospital in the same period, with no maternity . This raises a simple question: How does a hospital get established, apply for a licence, get approved within 24 hours, and then start receiving millions in public funds? After this issue was raised publicly, the so-called facility was suspended. But there has been no clear public information about prosecutions or recovery of the money. Around the same time, SHA payment data stopped being shared, making it much harder for citizens to follow how public funds are being spent. Transparency isn’t a favour. It’s a right. That’s why I’m calling on CS Aden Duale and the Ministry of Health to publish SHA payment data from August to December. Open data is the only real protection the public has against misuse of public funds. I’ll attach the evidence below.
