@NickWit2413 Yeah, they’ve tried to compete by using cheaper materials, but structural stuff is still lumber and still not automated (so expensive). The downside is they won’t last near as long.

I will donate $100,000 to @hasanthehun's fundraising campaign for early prisoner release if he allows @iFixit to tear apart the collar his dog has been wearing on Twitch and verify it isn't a shock collar.

@TLDragon23 @bayeslord And the future is genuinely exciting. Even the near-future. Eg: Self-driving cars will give rural areas their party vibe back, lost since drinking and driving laws. (While important, saving lives, they stopped gatherings with alcohol, an important aspect of rural social life)

Until we have an objective test for consciousness (good luck!), an understanding of what “understanding” is, or what it actually MEANS to “experience” something — this article’s sheer overconfidence that AI doesn't (or can’t) have any of these things is self-discrediting. Saying AI is doing nothing more than data processing or computation assumes that humans are doing something more than that. Are we, really? How do we know? If experience and consciousness do emerge from a certain level of information processing (which is what it increasingly seems like), why do we carbon-based life forms get some kind of monopoly on it? We talk about how AI is becoming more human-like, but it turns out humans may have just been computers this whole time — we’re trained on a vast dataset (i.e. life!) and our brains run on complex algorithms that we finally have the capability to replicate in silico. Historically as a species, we haven't done well coping with challenges to our anthropocentric delusions. We didn't take it well when Galileo showed that we're not the center of the universe (or even the solar system). We didn't take it well when Darwin demonstrated that we're not exactly created in God's image. And now that we're experiencing a digital species that seems increasingly indistinguishable from humans in intelligence, creativity, and at least the appearance of consciousness, the cope is off the charts. This article is almost nonsensical. Saying AI only “simulates” consciousness is like saying airplanes only simulate flying — nope, airplanes actually fly — they have a different causal mechanism than birds do, but the effect is real. The effect IS the mechanism, not just an external representation of it. By definition, that’s not “simulation,” folks. Of course, this doesn’t mean AI is conscious. We don't have these answers yet either way, so I’d rather not act as cock sure as this author is when he dismisses computational functionalism (which btw Dan Dennett, Nobel Laureate Geoff Hinton, and several of his own Google DeepMind colleagues have embraced) — BUT — this whole conversation comes less from empirical evidence and WAY more from a sense of existential dread. It’s cope on steroids. Many of us NEED AI to be "just a machine" — so we don't have to face the terrifying notion that if consciousness can simply emerge from complex information processing, maybe that's all WE are too.

Google DeepMind researcher argues that LLMs can never be conscious, not in 10 years or 100 years. "Expecting an algorithmic description to instantiate the quality it maps is like expecting the mathematical formula of gravity to physically exert weight."

@elonmusk No evidence suggests complex systems magically become sentient or conscious. Otherwise the economy would be conscious. This is a fairytale and some frontline ai researchers forget. Lol.

someone connected LIVING BRAIN CELLS to an LLM Cortical Labs grew 200,000 human neurons in a lab and kept them alive on a silicon chip, they taught the neurons to play Pong, then DOOM now someone wired them into a LLM... real brain cells firing electrical impulses to choose every token the AI generates you can see which channels were stimulated, the feedback from the neurons in choosing that letter or word

@heynavtoor When I pasted your article in it flagged the global instructions as critical and wanted a manifest file for the main folder but knew it would bloat some of my other folders I don’t use heavily. The rest I had going. It wrote up global instructions for me to copy and paste.

@ALHume78 @coreyganim It will only work in the folder(s) you give it access to. Drop copies of important files into the folder so you still have the originals outside Claude’s folder(s). Once you create important docs in the Claude folder, do the reverse: paste it outside the folder to have a backup.
