The Magdala stone is in DC this month and it’s incredible! I feel privileged to have seen it in person. The part that surprised me was its size. It’s much smaller than I imagined. The Magdala stone dates back to before the destruction of the Second Temple (which was destroyed in 70 CE). Since it was carved while the Second Temple was still standing, archeologists hypothesize that the artist likely saw the actual menorah in Jerusalem with their own eyes and carved this one to match. The arches likely represent the arches of the temple as well. It’s within the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the Museum of the Bible. (You need separate tickets to see it but it’s worth the price of admission!)
