𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 on Uganda’s Health Sector: Navigating funding cuts, prioritizing National Health Goals, and Sustaining community health amid donor shifts: #CEHURDUpdateMeeting ❝Most of the clinics which were providing ART and SRHR services were funded by Pepfar and USAID, but they have since closed following the funding cuts. There has been a loss of morale among the care givers and other expert clients.❞ ~ @KitandweRhodine | Lawyer | Advocacy officer - CEHURD ❝There is a dichotomisation between acute and chronic care. We now focus also on multisectoral collaboration to address adolescent and youth health concerns.❞ ~ Dr. Irene Mwenyango | @MinofHealthUG ❝The Minsitry is running a number of funding programs, such as UWEP and the youth venture capital fund, however, many would-be beneficiaries lack integrity, which affects their access to these funds.❞ ~ Patience Namanya | @Mglsd_UG ❝Government is now engaging further to introduce new feeding strategies, and is now working with communities to improve nutrition im schools. There is also an uptake of interest in gender and mental health challenges of students.❞ ~ @SsemakulaHenry4 | @Educ_SportsUg #RightHereRightNow @MaggieNanyombi

❝Sexual and reproductive health and rights aren’t just health issues - they are human rights, grounded in frameworks like the ICPD, CEDAW, and the Maputo Protocol. Uganda’s Constitution and National SRHR Policy affirm these same principles: the right to make informed choices, to be free from discrimination, and to access quality care. When these rights are upheld, we see real change - fewer maternal deaths, lower HIV infections, and a reduction in gender-based violence. As journalists, you have the power to translate complex policies into human stories that inform, hold leaders accountable, and help communities claim the rights and services they deserve.❞ ~ @KitandweRhodine , Advocacy Officer, CEHURD on SRHR from a Human Rights-Based & Public Health Lens #CEHURDMediaFellowship

One of our core values at CEHURD is non-discrimination, we are committed to equity, justice, and inclusivity. Discrimination of any form in healthcare, education, and public services deepens inequalities and denies people their dignity. On this #ZeroDiscriminationDay, we urge policymakers, institutions, and communities to take concrete steps in breaking barriers and creating a society where fairness and respect are the standard. ❝Uganda’s HIV and AIDS Prevention and Control Act raises serious human rights concerns. Section 12 mandates forced HIV testing for those arrested for sexual offenses before a court even determines guilt. In 2022, a pilot scheme extended testing to all arrestees, regardless of the offense. Section 18(2)(e) allows medical professionals to disclose a person’s HIV status without consent to anyone in close or continuous contact, while Section 18(2)(h) permits disclosure to those exposed to their blood or bodily fluids. These provisions undermine privacy, consent, and the rights of people living with HIV.❞ ~@KitandweRhodine | Advocacy officer CEHURD on repealing regressive laws.
