We are delighted to welcome our new Head of Mission, His Excellency Hon Ababu-Namwamba, EGH, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Fruitful talks with H.E Veronica Garcia Gutierrez, Ambassador of Costa Rica to Kenya and the @UN in Nairobi, who paid me a courtesy call. Our discussions covered a wide range of issues of mutual interest, including strengthening the UN Office at Nairobi (UNON), consolidating the @UNEP headquarter functions and Nairobi as the global capital for environmental diplomacy, and deepening south-south cooperation through the G77+China whose Nairobi Chapter I chair. Kenya and Costa Rica share a strong commitment to multilateralism. #Diplomacy. @Kmunep

UN FOOTPRINT IN KENYA ON THE UP Nairobi is the sole @UN capital in Africa, and indeed the whole of the global south. It is a phenomenal honour and privilege that comes with equally weighty responsibility, which must never be taken for granted. We are determined to continue improving service delivery to the diplomatic community as the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) expands and evolves under the UN80 Reforms. With the largest phyisical UN campus in the world at 140 acres, host to over 86 agencies, some 25k staff and dependents, and servicing in excess of 176 duty stations across the world, UNON is a key cog in the global UN system. And Kenya welcomes more of the UN footprint in Nairobi. It is in this context that we have concluded a historic comparative benchmarking with sister UN Capitals in Geneva, Vienna, and New York, as well as Washington DC. The primary objective being to amplify best practices in diplomatic privileges, immunities, and the general working environment. I thank colleague Ambassadors and Heads of Mission, H.E Fancy Too and D-HoM Amb. James Waweru (Geneva), H.E Maurice Makoloo and D-HoM Amb. @ValerieRugene (Vienna), H.E Ekitela Lokaale and D-HoM Amb. Yabesh Monari (New York) and H.E David Kerich with his superb support team of Geofrey Juma and Robert Wasike (Washington, DC) for not only helping to facilitate the highly successful benchmarking exercise, but also being available and engaged in this pivotal process. I concluded this historic circuit with H.E Amb. David Kerich, who hosted me in his office at the Kenya Embassy in Washington, DC for final reflections and experience sharing. Shukran Balozi for your fantastic service to the flag. And of course it is always a joy returning to the city of my Alma Marta, my old stomping grounds of Washington, District of Columbia.

A strong @UN presence in Nairobi is good for multilateralism. Good for the world.

Happy United Nations Day 2025. As the United Nations turns 80, there is a great opportunity to reimagine a more fit-for-purpose, efficient, equitable and responsive UN in the context of the #UN80 Reforms.

As we embarked on official duty in Vienna, Austria, I led our delegation and Embassy staff in praying and honouring the indelible memory of Baba Raila Amolo Odinga, as we closed the Embassy's condolences book. It is a watershed moment marked by the #UN80 initiative that has been described by Secretary General Antonio Guterres as curated to “make the UN more agile, integrated, efficient, and better able to respond to today’s global challenges in a context of tightening financial resources."
