It would have been a whole lot easier - and ultimately cheaper for the government - if they had installed air purifiers in schools and hospitals and other public buildings.

I think it would be a really great reality tv show to take a couple dozen boomers, ideally recently retired, and give them entry level white-collar jobs in high cost of living cities and basically just saying "Go try to live."

You also don’t walk out of college or university expecting to buy a new 4 bedroom house, two cars, boats, skidoos, etc. The reason you struggle is because you aren’t willing to wait and make do like we did. Your entitlement is causing you to struggle.

May I ask that we normalize CEOs taking pay cuts instead of laying off staff despite making record profits?!

Tough love is not evidence-based support for people in recovery or with substance use disorder. Harm reduction reduces overdose and connects people to care. Tough love increases risk of relapse and death.

I ordered a T-shirt that I liked and it turns out it’s from a wee T-shirt maker in France. They’ve emailed about 35 times with individual updates about it being made, embroidered, packed and shipped. They seem excited that they’ve had a sale. I’m actual le buzzing for them.

Small lit mags not paying should really be the least of everyone's worries: in the author's note at the back of The English Understand Wool — an awesome little thriller that, among other things, takes the piss out of publishing — Helen DeWitt, a conventionally published author, credits "extraordinarily generous" readers for helping her replace her laptop, and provides her blog and Ko-fi for anyone who'd like to send her a little something to support her work. The industry's a bitch, literally everybody's just gotta take it where they can get it

While I'm not against celebrating our new hires, it does reinforce the "we're trying really hard [and isn't that enough?]" narrative. This needs to be paired with net numbers, reflecting gains, losses (and there have been many, with many more to come), and progress towards actual targets based on needs. Recruitment is not at a fast enough pace, retention is a serious crisis that is getting worse, and there's an utter lack of transparency when it comes to the overall picture. As a journalist, just because MOH PR is handing you softball puff pieces doesn't mean you need to run with them without raising some other questions.
