Trumpet was my first introduction to music—and I truly hated it. I would reluctantly go to music school every Saturday, where my teacher, Mr. Delman, would rip into me because I showed no interest in the Disney songs we were constantly playing. One particular day during a rehearsal, Mr. Delman stopped the class and made me solo. I fumbled, of course, and to his frustration—right in front of everyone—he yelled, “Peter, you will never amount to anything in music.” At the time, I didn’t care. But over the years, it burned at me like the sun. Needless to say, I’ve used that memory to drive me forward. Moral of the story: never tell a child what they can or cannot do. So thank you, Mr. Delman… you kind of created me.
