@KnowledgeMatrs @LHUSD1 the high school gains weren't built in high school. they were built in third and fifth and seventh, when nobody was looking. that's the part most reform skips because the test results show up later than the budget cycle.

Maybe we have all been thinking of feedback wrong? I have always thought of feedback being about the work. From @KateJones_teach quoting @dylanwiliam

Teachers are led to believe that having kids memorize facts is unnecessary & soul-deadening. But a 6th-grade civics class shows it can be fun--and lay the foundation for critical thinking. More in my new post on Minding the Gap: nataliewexler.substack.com/p/how-to-make-…

WE ❤️ TO SEE IT! “As a district, we had to agree that all students need access to rich history, science, and literature content, and that what they learn in one year should intentionally prepare them for the next.” 🔑Intentionally🔑

🚨What happens when all educators in a district have a shared understanding of teaching + learning that is rooted in knowledge? @LHUSD1 is demonstrating the incredible gains their HIGH SCHOOLERS are seeing as a result of instructional shifts made in elementary + middle school!🏆

“The more factual information you have about a topic, the easier it is to learn more about it—and to think about it analytically.” @natwexler’s latest highlights the importance of retrieval on analytical skills.

“Call me crazy, but if you give students a passage about volcanoes… why not make the goal to learn about volcanoes?” When we center knowledge, everything changes— comprehension, vocabulary, engagement. Let’s give kids something worth knowing. 👉 open.substack.com/pub/laurenbrow…

@USHistoryIdeas latest Substack is🔥! Systematically building knowledge is critical and we need to dispel the idea of “first you learn to read and then you read to learn.” All students need to be learning content, especially our youngest learners! open.substack.com/pub/laurenbrow…

“Using aligned materials, in contrast, lightens their cognitive load and gives them more opportunity to practice the same skills covered in class…” @KnoxSchools is working to eliminate the layers of different programs + materials creating an “unhealthy lasagna.” 👏👏👏

Some students get tutoring but end up as ‘intervention lifers.’ This common sense tactic could help. Via @Chalkbeat buff.ly/fihBbYw

@KnowledgeMatrs @CurriculumMatrs Great article! We often create too many topics for teacher PD - PD is fragmented and there is not enough time allowed for practicing the new instructional strategies.
