A late ‘review’ of the game. More random thoughts to be honest. I’ve watched Liverpool for pushing 50 years. It’s always been a pleasure, and I’ve looked forward to almost all of the games. If not exactly looked forward to, then maybe excited or even nervous.
Tonight it was a chore. Watching them whilst leaving the Mrs next door on her own was annoying. I felt nothing; before, during or after. I let out a bit of a semi-joyous whimper when we scored our first, rather than delirious shouting. It was like I was trying to care, but didn’t quite manage it. A bit like our players.
Going through the motions. There was a distant memory deep within the players that football was supposed to be fun, and an outlet for their artistic brilliance. No one, other than Rio Ngumoha convinced that they actually cared.
I think Arne Slot is done. As I’ve said so often, it shouldn’t be with abuse or hatred. He gave us number 20, and one of my favourite days alongside my lads this time last year . It’s not just about him though. So many of our squad need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. They’ve let us, and themselves down massively. So weak, both physically and mentally, that it’s embarrassing. Maybe they should be giving some of their ridiculous wages away to charity. Maybe they’re just too comfortable; surrounding themselves with those unwilling or unable to challenge them.
At least I’ve been numbed down after this season; and the pain I should be feeling is suitably anaesthesised by a strange disconnect. I just can’t be arsed.
Hopefully I might feel better soon.
It might (and probably is..) a strange comparison, but the nearest I felt to this was when I came back from Heysel, not wanting to think about football for some considerable time. You can’t compare the events; to do so would be bizarre . But emotionally I feel that, at this time, I’ve simply had enough.
