Interesting new result from Sweden: AI adoption there boosted job postings substantially. However, employment stayed flat for years after AI adoption.

This is my favorite figure from this paper. It shows that methods that adjust for heterogeneous treatment effects rarely change the fundamental results of TWFE. "While scenarios where accounting for [heterogeneous treatment effects] completely reverses the empirical findings are theoretically possible, they are rare."

"The main threats to causal inference with panel data are parallel trends violations and insufficient power."

🚨 What happens when you take a bunch of human capital out of a local economy? Is brain drain a real thing & what are the consequences? In a new paper, we shed light on this in the context of highly developed economies: Sweden and Norway. @ALPWillen @KatrineLoken @PetterLundborg

New on inequalitylab.world: "Firms as tax shelters: The disguise of personal expenses as business expenses", by D. Leite Key finding: individuals who control firms shift 36% of their monthly personal expenditures to firms Conclusion: inequality is underestimated; redistributive taxation won't be enough to solve the pb; we also need economic democracy wid.world/news-article/f…

A few more words about the "Practical Guide to Shift-Share Instruments" that we just posted (w/ @instrumenthull, @XJaravel) We tried to make it useful to wide groups of readers: new users of shift-share IVs, experienced users, and those who didn't even know they were users (1/N)
Xavier Jaravel@XJaravel

1/5 Looking for a clear and gentle intro to shift-share instruments? I'm excited to release today our "practice guide to shift-share instruments" with @borusyak and @instrumenthull, forthcoming at the Journal of Economic Perspectives @AEAjournals 👇👇👇👇👇

Should we subsidise the care for elderly people? Patrizia blends elegant theoretical with excellent empirical work to show that an increase of the subsidy in fact paid for itself. She is an enormously promising researcher. Check out her work!

Introducing our #EconJMC @PatriziaMassner. In her #EconJMP “Should Elder Care Be Subsidized? Theory and Evidence from Sweden” she examines the impact of a 2002 elder care fee reform that lowered costs by 40% on avg. for 2/3 of Sweden’s municipalities. #patriziamassner" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">su.se/institute-for-… 1/6

Having written extensively about how real wages have risen strongly for working class Americans since 2019, let me be clear about a few things, on both the facts, and how we should interpret them. 🧵
