How does FDA regulation affect innovation and market concentration? #EconTwitter In my JMP, I show that deregulation: -⬆️innovation by as much as 400% -⬆️firm entry by 1000% -⬇️prices by 40%. In some cases, deregulation drives product safety innovation. More details:

Honored to have my research (w/ @parker_rog) on medical device innovation cited by the House & Senate Diabetes Caucus in their recent Congressional letter. Glad to see evidence guiding policies that affect patient access. shaheen.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…

🚨 What happens when the gov't cuts prices on medical technologies? New research (w/ @YunanJi) finds a 61% price cut led to: 75% drop in innovation (may fully offset savings) 49% fewer new firms 28% more production moved overseas 3x repair/replacement rate 🧵(1/n)

Combined with recent/forthcoming cuts to NIH and NSF funding, plus layoffs of FDA reviewers, we’d need significant policy work to reclaim the cures we stand to lose.

Yesterday’s proposal to cut U.S. drug prices by 30–80% could reduce innovation even more sharply than prices, further push production offshore, and erode drug quality—according to our recent research.

8⃣ These findings are especially relevant in light of many Medicare price reforms, including upcoming IRA provisions to cut prescription drug prices. Link to paper: dropbox.com/scl/fi/h2i93ki…

7️⃣ Our findings suggest that the value of lost innovation may fully offset the cost savings from the price cuts. However, we highlight that more strategic price cuts, targeting areas where R&D expenses are small relative to revenue, could save money while preserving innovation.

I especially enjoyed our text analysis of prosthetic limb patents: - Cost-saving innovations emerged from Civil War procurement frugality - Wartime advances prioritized buyer desires: enhanced comfort during CW (amputee buyers) & utility limbs for WWI vets' re-employment (gov't)

New! Paper! We have LLMs listen to convos between people who disagree on gun control and dynamically generate/suggest helpful rephrasings of messages before they are sent. Users receiving this treatment have better, less divisive conversations. 🔗 arxiv.org/pdf/2302.07268… 🧵: 1/7
