Tourette is such a horrible condition because while it may differ by individual, it’s often characterised by making the individual say something extremely inappropriate whether they believe it or not. Individuals with Tourette are more likely to commit suicide due the condition.

#BAFTAFilmAwards host Alan Cumming thanked the audience for their “understanding” after a series of audible outbursts from Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson interrupted the ceremony. • One incident saw Davidson shout the n-word while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage. • Davidson, the inspiration for BAFTA-nominated “I Swear,” was diagnosed with Tourette’s at 25. His symptoms include tics and involuntary outbursts. • “You may have noticed some strong language in the background there, this can be part of how Tourette’s syndrome shows up for some people as the film explores that experience,” Cumming told the audience. wp.me/pc8uak-1lGWhl

According to Google, Tourette syndrome can include involuntary verbal tics like shouting obscene, racial or taboo words, known as coprolalia. These are neurological, not intentional, and only affect about 10 to 30% of people with TS. That said, it’s hard not to question when a “diagnosis” is being used as a crutch to excuse blatant racism. Michael and Delroy deserve public apologies, not the audience.

Would Alan Cumming have asked for the same grace & understanding if he shouted a homophobic slur while a gay person was on stage? Or an Anti-Semitic slur while a Jewish person was on stage? To be clear, all are awful. But I wonder would a non black be asked to show grace?

@NotFrankA @LateefSaka @OTOCoker No, I said fxck him because I believe that REGARDLESS of his disability he’s racist. He can be both and I believe he is… Clearly by your standards it’s okay for him to shout “n*gger” anytime he sees a black person. Ridiculous…

@LateefSaka @OTOCoker I understand the reason. And in my opinion I still think what happened was a disgrace and he should apologise and the baftas should apologise. Plain and simple.

@Kojo_96 @OTOCoker No. What I’m saying is it’s not voluntary, conscious or to be used as a confirmation of their beliefs. People can feel offended but they should understand the reason.

I’m sorry but a medical condition doesn’t excuse the N Word in 2026. Racism is internal.

When I watched I Swear, I had no grasp of Tourette’s syndrome, the unique nature of people’s ticks, and the research being conducted to deal with. Watched documentaries, read more about it, and I can acknowledge how involuntarily volatile the condition is, but this is mad to see
