The ATREE team joined a packed house at the Bangalore International Centre to celebrate the new book “Fruitful Insights: Heritage, Ecology, and Promise of India’s Trees”.
The book is a remarkable journey through millions of years of evolution, ecology, culture and climate, all woven through the story of the simple fruit tree.
Our deepest gratitude to Umesh Maheshwari, whose generous support and long-term engagement made this entire project possible.
The evening featured a wide-ranging lecture by Dr Prasanna N.S. and a joint discussion with his ATREE co-authors — Dr Eapsa Berry, Dr Ravikanth G., Dr Ganesan R., Prof Uma Shaanker R. and our founder-president Prof Kamal Bawa — to share how fruit trees connect India's landscapes, livelihoods and legends.
From ancient partnerships between plants and animals to the cultural threads of mangoes and figs in our myths and rituals, these trees tell stories far beyond their sweetness.
In a warming world, perennial fruit trees offer real hope — supporting biodiversity, storing carbon, stabilising soils and building resilience in communities across India's biodiversity hotspots.
This work is part of ATREE's ongoing FRESH initiative, which supports smallholder farmers and communities in building sustainable, nutrition-focused livelihoods around fruit trees across India.
