The implementation of the law for the unification of education by the new Turkish Republic leaders, which secularized the school system and marginalized Islamic religious instruction after the fall of the Ottomans, was perceived by traditionalist Islamic leaders including Sheikh Said as anti-Islamic. He was very open with his grievances in his sermons, framing the struggle as a defense of Islam against the nationalists Turks who he framed as against Islamic customs. The religious motivation of Sheikh Said was very clear. Sheikh Said utilized a seal identifying himself as the leader of the fighters for the sake of religion and he urged his followers to rise up to raise religion and restore Sharia law honored by the caliphate heirs, i.e. the Ottomans.
